Kiosk

Due to work in the morning this is a flying visit to catch Bella's band. We meet Ginny, kids and friends on the way into the Windmill. Although it's difficult to review someone you've known for a long time albeit sporadically I'll try my best.

Kiosk are based in Leeds and start the set with a sound like mid to late 70s electronic avant garde that was somewhat of a push against the guitar based punk rockers whilst progressing that era's Euro electronic bands. So a good start in an electronic gothic shoegaze vibe but over time it picks up into near techno with slices of dance rave getting a fair few folk jumping and more nodding along. Bella has a great singing voice at times quiet and thoughtful and other times strident shouts like the best punk female vocalists. But don't get me wrong she can sing a tune when needed and to which we are treated to. The other member of Kiosk plays a bass with a very dirty fuzz box which nods to American hard core thrash. Maybe that's just me listening to too much Big Black and their ilk. At times the bass seemed to drive the synth sounds? Whether or not it's a great analogue undercurrent to the electronic drumbeats and riffing synths. So a great set of varied styles well melded together. Avant garde indeed sounding fresh. Kiosk go down very well with the crowd getting a few heckles of disappointment when Bella announces that this is the last song. Well worth the flying visit.
