Lutz and Marc are over from Arpke (look it up) and fly the day after the Heathrow power outage (look it up). So lucky. I meet them at Balham station and after a quick pint in the Bedford (British bitter of course) and a meal at home we cycle off to the Windmill. Simon is conveniently stood at the bar having ordered his drink. Tonight is a Kneejerk presents show and the bands could possibly be in order of appearance as that's what it says on the web site:
Dead Reckoning
Oral Habit
Scarlett Woolfe
Export Import.
As we wait for Simon to get our drinks we hear the last strains of what sounds like an excellent dirty guitar blues boogie Cramps like set. Ah well am sure the others will be just as good. And the next band are great. A hard punky heavy sound that gets the crowd going hitting the sweet spot between British alt anarcho punk and American west coast grunge rock. I assume Oral Habit. Worth seeing again. After a brief sojourn in the garden next up is another great band who deliver a set more leaning towards British alt post punk goth crossed with east coast proto punk rockiness. Not sure if that's mainly due to the singer (possibly Scarlett Woolfe themselves?) have a great vocal range reminiscent of Siouxsie and Patti not so much a mix of the two but channelling each at various times. That's Sioux and Smith of course. Again, worth another viewing. Simon's got an early start tomorrow so bows out whilst the three of us stay for the headliner. Someone I've been wanting to see again as they were a sort of Alternative TV neo jazz vibe. Were I say but Export Import seem to have morphed into a crooning light listening jazz swing band and not in a good way. Maybe it was having 2 rock bands before them but I wasn't impressed. I think Lutz and Marc even less so. They never dropped into the strangeness that is essential for any band that takes on a jazz vibe needs to in my humble and admittedly very uneducated in jazz opinion. After the start of the 4th song we take our leave and cycle home with only a chain slip mishap. A few more drinks at home of course. To complete the weekend Sunday is spent wandering around east London where Lutz used to live before watching the Germany Italy match in Old Street. I was supporting Germany I'm ashamed to say. I guess half way there being a St Pauli follower. Monday was my birthday and after a visit to the Imperial War Museum the weekend caught up with us all with our German friends tubing to Heathrow and Debbie and I wandering along the South Bank in the 1st sun of the weekend.
P.S. Forgot to add that we saw someone in full crusader chain mail uniform wander into the Windmill, go out the back and then we saw him wandering down the road towards Brixton Hill as we were leaving. Should have taken a photo. Although slightly insensitive given what's happening in Palestine.
