NYE23/24

It's our go to New Years Eve / Debbie's Birthday Celebration venue being the Brixton Windmill. Pete and Wendy are already nursing their pints on the table next to the older regulars. Don't worry Pete, our time will come to watch Serie A above the chaos. After getting our drinks in at the quiet bar, it gets busier later as it's a sell out, we are treated to Tatyana who plays a harp alongside singing against a backing track of euroish disco hard house. It's interesting and a good start to the evening. Next up are Automotion who we've seen before, indeed this time last year, and over the last year they've sharpened up and seem to have hit a groove of hard guitar grunge rock and excellently delivered. And no suspect covers this NYE. We go outside for a bit of air in the damp night and as we are so busy chatting about Christmas, gigs, festivals, brothel creepers, cycle rides and practicing our Welsh (Debbie's present is a Teach Your Cat Welsh book) we miss nearly all of Vanity Fairy's set for which I'm gutted, as I tell Daisy when I see her later. I think she appreciates the sentiment. Ah well, I catch half a song of excellend disco retroness. As we near midnight Danny takes the stage to take us over the line and to regale us with some hard hitting rap which gets the place grooving and whooping with arms waving. He likes a bit of chat, unlike Automotion, the funniest bit being waving away the dry ice telling us he doesn't like it as he's asthmatic. Well it was funny at the time but maybe he was serious. Doesn't seem to affect his quick quipping rapping. We're busy in here by now. We also sing Happy Birthday to Debbie although we don't get everyone joining in like last year and Pete and Wendy get in the traditional tequila shots. Start the year as you mean to go on. Next up are Cuckoo Spit who are a great end to the night (well, for us) serving a great dose of at times heavy post punk indie melding Radiohead and Massive Attack with the inevitable tinge of Hawkwind (having accosted the singer after and telling her this she says that she's not a massive Hawkwind fan but her dad is). Sounds great don't it? Will have to catch them after a less tiring night so see if that impression is quite right. Pete and Wendy leave us for their long trek home, thanks for coming so far, and Debbie and I have our final drink of the night before cycling home yelling Happy New Year at passing strangers and receiving similar sentiments back. A great night out...
