My first big and crowded gig since the start of the Global Corona Virus Lockdown. The iconic Brixton Academy is the same venue as the last big gig 18 months ago nearly to the day that being Fontaines DC. Determined to not have my phone nicked this time. Maya's idea who I meet outside the venue and then we have to walk all along the side of the Academy and round the corner so the longest view I've ever seen here in decades of coming. But it's moving very fast at walking pace which is explained by the extremely cursory glance at our phones to check for Covid jabs / testing and quite a few checking tickets on the door. Once inside we queue for drinks and then go inside proper and as no support band have a natter about what we're both up to. Soon enough the band take the stage and we're off and into a great set of dance although I'm not that energetic as getting over a long cold. The crowd are loving it and rightly so. All the big songs are played and quite a few others I'm not familiar with. Should have Spotified them as well as listened to my vinyl copy of For Ever. Their music spans a lot of genres always with a dance beat underneath. Great musicians and soulful singing the female having a heavenly voice hitting those high notes. Jungle hit the mark with straight up funky tunes, more jazzy funk, a big nod to house which has us punters nodding, a sprinkling of disco dust and also a couple of indie anthem tinged tunes including a couple of guitar solos including down on the knees posturing which looks a bit odd. The lighting is great although I think a bit of time with normal stage lighting would have been nice so's we could have seen the musicians properly. But it all adds to a great spectacle and show. And they come on for an encore and not just a quick thank you but a few songs we all know and love for a fantastic ending. At the end whilst many are streaming out the doors the band all come to the front of the stage to take their bows which is a very nice touch. It's Jungle's first date out post Covid as well I think as it's the 1st of 4 shows at the Academy before a tour of America and Europe. As it's nearly 11 and any local pubs will be packed Maya and myself part and I cycle back home. A great night...
