Julia put me onto what I first thought was BBC (Beeb) filming a gig but which I soon realised was a record company PR filming jobby at the BBC (Balham Bowls Club). Raining. Snow forecast. Nick cries off with route (sic) canal surgery. Pete cries off with dodgy tummy. Chris is working too hard. Alex never pretended he was interested. So Simon and I brave the weather and turn up about 8 to pay our dues to the underage kids on entrance to the upstairs ballroom. We catch the last few bars of
Peter Parker's Rock & Roll Club who sound promising. As we bump into Todd, Carl and Sarah we've enough company to chat to. This is a record company showcase session and the four bands don't have a whole lotta time to play. Next up is
Ese & the Vooduu People who plays guitar and has bass and drums backing her delivering a pretty decent rock bluesy sound breaking out into a bit of reggae at times. Great voice. Only a few songs and in retrospect a real shame as they were the best of the bunch. Next are / is
Tasha Fox who tells us that the band is new and they haven't played before. Then quickly into the set she has technical difficulties and mic is changed then guitar then back again with new lead. A bit of a shame but to be honest it's pretty MOR in a Fleetwood Mac vein. Not my cup of tea. And to finish us up is
The Niall Kelly Band who start with a few C&W numbers so are starting pretty damn low in my estimation then do a bit of MOR blues and are persuaded back to do their best song which is Suzie Q. Persuaded back by the record company liggers who have a vested interest in them being persuaded back. It was one of those evenings where I'm thinking I'm being a miserable old git looking scornfully at the even older gits dancing badly as if they don't get out too much. I'm probably wrong about all of that and was in a bad mood for some reason. Having to get the tube 2 days running maybe. In retrospect I think I was justified. Anyways here's some pics although too engrossed in the spectacle to take a snap of the best band Ese and her Vooduu folk...
