White Denim

Whilst Ramsay and Jo are sunning themselves in Sri Lanka son John and me are freezing our proverbials off in London. At least we have music to cheer ourselves up. So John's got guest tickets for the sold out gig tonight and we meet early at a boozer opposite the Islington Assembly Hall. I've never been in this place before - although have outside as it's where the Pride of North London finish their cup parades. After a couple of swift ones we along with John's friends Tamzin and Andrew go over the road to waltz through security as VIPs and after a long search we're finally found on the guest list. First up are Black Peaches who are a six piece playing 70s rock which is very accessible. Upbeat and with a sort of funky flavour but not heavy they are all good musicians. Reminiscent of Santana without so much of the guitar. A guy I got chatting to said they reminded him of Hot Chip and a quick web search shows that one of the members did play for them and Scritti Politti although not on that brilliant piece of pop The Sweetest Girl. Soon the room packs out and on come White Denim who serve us up a great set of proper blues based rock and roll. Again great musicians. They verge into hard rock with a punky edge at times nearing towards late 70s psychedelia. In many ways a merge of past rock genres which is no mean feat. They go down very well but there's not a lot of movement despite their being eminently danceable. Ah well. London audiences. A good night out but could've been a more animated bunch of punters. Cheers John!
