Monday night at the Garage. Just up the road from work, agreed limited alcohol intake so cycling home, not been here for a while, so all in all looking forward to it. Don't meet too early and as we go in bouncer says support is on which we're not that bothered about. Nick reminds us that we're too cynical about support bands - do we remember Toy at the Horrors who are actually quite good (see my account). Tho Lewis Floyd Henry don't sound too promising. We wander in to the strains of blues guitar and drums. Nick remembers the name and says this is a one man band who plays in the street in Brick Lane and east end pubs at lunchtime. He apparently has the smallest drum set in the world. After getting refreshments we go toward the front and yep, there is a crazy small drum set with two 6" drums and matching cymbal. Looks like bought in ToysRUs. Baby Dept. But boy, does Lewis Floyd get some noise out of them. At times I was convinced it was a backing track - but no, definitely his feet tapping / banging out the rhythm. And the guitar playing was bang on. Big sound changing between rock, southern blues, blue grass slide, chugging R&B. Great singing too skipping between gruff rock, wailing blues and some story telling with multiple characters. And with a few decent raps thrown in for free. Lewis Floyd brings us toward a crescendo with full on drums and thrash punk guitar interspersed with Hendrix teeth playing guitar. Leaves us wanting more. Must be a great Sunday lunchtime pub Experience (Jimi, Experience, geddit? oh suit yourself)
Anticipating the main act from Stateside the Strange Boys. Competent country style but to be honest not upbeat enough for my simple tastes. File under Bob Dylan soundalike backed by Squeeze (who Nick never heard of, showing his age, again) but without the charisma of either the moody git or the Jools led cheeky chappies. Crowd showed signs of life for the last song which even I recognised, band exit, half crowd exit, very few shouts of encore (if any) and piped music comes on.
Go Dutch. As I've not filled my obligatory word count I'll take the opportunity to ask you to help sort out our London roads to make them safer for cyclists in a Dutch style, only take a tick...
...although Simon and I did make it home OK
