Duke Spirit

Olly accidentally finds out that his fave band of the moment happen to be playing his fave cinema of yesteryear when he's in London so extends his trip a by a night. I get there after work schmoozing and cocktails and he after teaching my daughter so is literally running late. Rush up to the secret bar for Red Stripe and JD chasers then downstairs for the band. Sound is great - 90's indie grunge which was great back in the day and seems to be making a comeback - maybe the 80s revival is over. Similar to my mate Al's old band Heartthrobs complete with blond female singer with attitude altho they were more shoe gazy than grungy. At times they veered towards  stadium grunge but then brought it back down to earth. The singer should use her instrumental talents more - we get a 10 second blast on the harp (9 below 0 type rather than Patrick Wolf) which sounds great but way too short. The crowd are low key - the mosh pit being a couple in front of us who bobbed about off their heels for a couple of songs. It may be against grunge principles but they could do with geeing up the crowd a bit which I'm sure the singer could do easily and then maybe they'll get to play those stadia rather than slide into obscurity. Always good to have a surprise night out tho and beat drinking too many cocktails with tech suppliers. Good call Olly!

RIP Troy Davis...
